We brewed this lovely effervescent citrus-accented Hefeweizen with the good people at Mad Chef Craft Brewery. We loaded up the kettle with ground lemon and orange peels, coriander, grains of paradise and finished the resulting beer with a boat load of tangerine juice. Citrus flavor waves are complimented by slight bubble gum and fun earthy flavors.
Hops: Mandarina Bavaria; Malts: Pilsner, Wheat; Yeast: Weizen.

In what is beCANming a weekly tradition for me, I stopped by on my day off from work at the local USPS P&DC & picked up a couple of Crowlers for my CANsumption, review & rating. I usually eschew Hefeweizens since they are my least favorite style, but I also want to support a local business.
From the Crowler: "1 Quart (32 fl oz)".
We used to score quarts as kids a block away, on the other side of the street, from the Little Dutch Café! Man, this all takes me back.
Once aCAN, the Crack! of the oversized vent unleashed a torrential spritz due to their generous overfilling of the Crowler CANtainer prior to seaming the lid. It really has to be done this way to minimize oxygen in the head space, but it always seems to take me by surprise. A slow, steady C-Line Glug into the awaiting glass resulted in a finger of foamy, soapy, rocky, eggshell-white head with modest retention that soon fell to wisps. Color was a turbid, murky Yellow-Gold (SRM = 4 - 5). Nose was odd for the style in that I got neither predominantly banana nor clove, but more of a pepperiness like black pepper. Hmm & mmm. Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was slightly banana, but there was much more of a biting pepperiness as well as an orange-lemony citrusiness. This was so far out of style as to be silly, but I liked it since I could barely perceive the banana esters. The Germans would scoff at this, I'm sure, but I would have it over ~ 90% of their authentic Hefeweizens. This one was less dependent on its yeast and driven much more by the adjuncts. Style mavens & hardcore traditionalists are not going to like it, but for those of us into experimentation, it will be a worthwhile beer. Finish was semi-dry, but the spicy pepperiness had me thinking about a salty pretzel as an acCANponiment. YMMV.
