Pour a lovely mahogany hue with a slightly hazy clarity and a sudsy head that dissipates into a thin, tight band around the shoulders. Nose expresses figs, tannins, and a hint of booze. Taste consistent with nose the addition of notes of toffee and oak and notes of ethanol at the finish. Mouthfeel is light in body with an assertive, prickly carbonation. Overall, a nice example of a style that you don’t see much of anymore. Not a lot of complexity and missing some of the hoppiness you would expect from an American Barleywine, but a nice effort from a solid brewery.
