Big roast flavor, with a light finish. Blend of dark malts yield flavors of chocolate and caramel.

Crowler purchased from Frequentem Brewing in Canandaigua, NY.
This one smells like chocolate, roast, caramel, smoke, and light coffee-ish aromas.
Black lagers are a favorite style of mine, and this is a pretty good take on one. I wish there was a touch more bite, maybe from hop character, but the malty sweetness and light smokiness makes me happy.
This is light bodied, creamy, and well-carbonated, with a good drinkability.
This was probably the least of the 4 beers I tried from Frequentem, but it was still tasty.

Pours very dark brown (SRM 31-36). Very dark mahogany highlights can be seen in this clear beer. A light chestnut head holds one inch and leaves delicate lace on a PBGC Lager pint glass.
The aroma is sweet and malty with light notes of dark roast. Lots of chocolate allows highlights of faint hops. Warmth brings out strong peanuts.
The malt is that of rich, roasted cocoa and barley. A strong, bitter, almost acrid finish is similar to molasses, and is a contrast, simultaneously appealing and off-putting. Interestingly, hazelnuts are far more apparent in the flavor, when I had expected peanuts from the aroma.
The texture is soft and smooth, like fur. There is a light, prickly carbonation and a medium body. While alcohol is low, it is, never-the-less, more present than expected. Astringency is an unfortunate quality.
Despite the harsh notes and astringency of this beer, it is still easily enjoyable. One could make a session while enjoying conversation, or possibly a mild cigar.
