This one pours a fairly dark black color, with a small head, and a bit of lacing.
This smells like dark chocolate, lots of roasty coffee, and orange rind.
This would have unfortunately been more successful without the addition of the orange. I know orange and chocolate is a classic combo, and I’ve had beers that have made it work, but this isn’t entirely one of them. The coffee comes across really well, but the orange is almost astringent on the back end – not citrusy, just rindy and astringent. The barrel character is tasty, but light – maybe it could have been in the barrels longer? Frequentem hasn’t been barrel aging beers for really long enough to get that long barrel aged character that I tend to love.
This is medium bodied, slightly thin for the style, but not very boozy.
Frequentem is still one of, if not my favorite brewery in the area, due to their super high quality lagers and great IPAs. They have a bit of a way to go on stouts, but they’re getting better, at least.
