I don’t think I’ve ever had a Black IPA with adjuncts. It’s such a weird concept, given it’s a style that already relies on combining existing styles. I do suppose that coconut as an adjunct in the style would make the most sense, but I remain skeptical of this one. Let’s dig into it
Pours a dark muddy brown with 2 fingers of tan head that fades to a thin cap and leaves decent lacing
The coconut just barely shines through in the nose, but what’s there is nice. I’m picking up on aromas of cocoa powder, dark toast, medium roast coffee, herbal hops, orange zest, and light toasted coconut
I’m not getting much coconut in taste either but I still dig it. On the front end of the sip I’m tasting roasty coffee, brown bread, herbal hops, cocoa powder, brown sugar, light pine, and coconut. The swallow brings notes of herbal hops, medium roast coffee, milk chocolate, grassy hops, toasted coconut, and dark toast
A medium body pairs with gentle carbonation, resulting in a creamy yet biting beer. Finishes dry with a firm bitterness
It’s nice to have a lower abv example of the style as I feel many are 8+%. Good stuff
