Appearance: clear dark amber to brown with ruby highlights; moderate tan to off-white head that varies in retention and fades quickly

Aroma: malt-forward with caramel, toasted grain, cocoa, and light coffee notes; subtle dark fruit such as raisin and fig with occasional mild floral or apple-like undertones

Taste: layered malt profile featuring caramel, toffee, toasted bread, cocoa, and light roast; hints of dark fruit and mild sweetness balanced by a gentle, understated bitterness

Mouthfeel: light to medium body with generally moderate carbonation; smooth and easy-drinking,

Overall: a well-rounded Dunkel with pleasant malt complexity and drinkability, offering notes of caramel, cocoa, and subtle fruit; enjoyable and approachable

Poured from a can into a pilsner glass.

Look: Clear mahogany. Thin beige head. Poor head retention but good lacing.

Smell: Caramel. Maybe a little earthy? Chocolate. Not overly aromatic.

Taste: Nice semi-sweet malt character. Caramel. Finishes with a coffee bitterness.

Feel: Light-medium body. Moderate carbonation provides a smooth, velvety mouthfeel. Outstanding in this department.

Overall: This beer is very mild in aroma and taste, but makes up for it with its wonderful flavor and mouthfeel. Very easy to drink.

The next German beer is a Dunkel. I am using a tulip glass and serving the beer at 48 degrees. The pour created a frothy, creamy, foamy, two-fingered, light tan head with excellent retention. The slow dissipation left lacing chunks on the glass. The beer is pale dark amber with light orange hues, clear, and has an SRM of 14. The beer's appearance is lovely.
Nosing the beer, I detect notes of crackers, lightly toasted malts, a light fruity aroma, caramel, light roasted malts, toffee, light cocoa, a hint of coffee, a touch of floral, and a hint of minerals.
The flavors start with crackers, lightly toasted malts, a touch of floral esters, caramel, toffee, cocoa, light coffee, light roasted malts, and a subtle earthiness undertone.
The mouthfeel is soft, finishing a touch malty sweet. The body is medium-light and medium-carbonated.
Final Thought: A delightful Dunkel with lots of flavors. I enjoyed sipping on this beer; I would not mind a few more. Other reviewers said it was flat; mine was not. I am grateful for that.

This is malty, and like another reviewer said, tastes flat. Not one I would look for more of.

Eschenbacher Privatbrauerei "Eschenbacher Frankentrunk"
500 ml can coded "P: 20/05/2025 E: 20/11/2026 12:00:09 22". Sampled on 28/10/2025
$59.99 / 24 can case - Costco's Biergarten Collection, Costco, Christiana, DE

Notes via stream of consciousness: First just a simple note that this was canned by Privatbrauerei Eibau. That's common in Europe, so no problem. It's poured a clear dark brown body with a ruby sheen to it in the full glass, but golden and orange highlights if held to the light. The head has dropped already and it's now nothing more than a few big bubbles around the sides of the glass. It didn't appear to have much carbonation to it as I was pouring it, and I noticed even days ago as I pulled it out of the case, that the can was a bit soft. It does not seem damaged in any way, however, and usually when a can leaks it'll be along the crimp of the lid but there's nothing there. I should also note that I did get the full volume. In the nose it's lightly sweet, caramelish, and bready. The taste is fuller, as usual, with some toastiness, some apple-like fruitiness, and a suggestion of cocoa powder. Dark fruit notes emerge in the finish with raisin and fig. It's only moderately bitter but still mainly dry in the finish. In the mouth it's light-medium in body, and quite smooth but at the same time dull. I honestly don't think this beer is supposed to be as flat as it is but what can I do? That kills it on appearance and mouthfeel, and that's a shame as it's otherwise quite charming and quaffable.

Color is a handsome but odd shade of pale brownish amber. Pleasing aroma of grain with applesauce cake. Just slightly sweet with a broad hint of smoke. Maybe a splash of the old Arnold Palmer. Plenty of foam in the glass and lush and spritzy on the tongue. This is yet another little-known example of excellent German brewing-- extremely drinkable and mouth-filling. From the 500 ml can purchased in the apparently bottomless Costco Biergarten case.

From the half liter can in the 2025 Costco Biergarten Collection, it pours a clear mahogany color with a modest off-white head that slowly reduces. The nose gets a good dose of sweet malt with caramel notes. The mouth follows with a slightly caramelly, slightly sweet flavor. Modest aftertaste.
