1 litre plastic bottle screwtop purchased at an Eki supermarket in Vilnius, Lithuania and served into a weissbier glass. 7.5% ABV.

Stiprusis Šviesusis Alus. Cento 1 litre.

HEAD: None (recedes too quickly to note any of its characteristics). Leaves no lacing.

BODY: Clear pale copper of average vibrance. Clean, with no visible yeast. Translucent, transparent.

It's an okay look for a pale lager - which is to say it looks like most do.

AROMA: Faint honey. Copper malt extract. Caramalt sweetness. Has no real hop profile to speak of (which is to style, to be fair). ABV is surprisingly well disguised, actually.

I find no metallic off-character, no buttery diacetyl, no other off-notes.

This aroma promises a simple shallow budget pale lager with no offending characteristics or off-flavours. And that's kind of the best you hope for when you buy a 1 litre screwtop of Ukrainian pale lager...

TASTE: The expectations created by the aroma are met in the taste. Inoffensive, but simple and narrow in its flavour diversity.

What does strike me is how remarkably well disguised the ABV is...this drinks like it's your standard 4.3-5.2% pale lager, and drinking it blind one would never guess it's actually 7.5% ABV.

TEXTURE: Your usual smooth, wet light to medium bodied pale lager texture. Well-carbonated. Unrefreshing. Not buttery, gushed, hot, boozy, astringent, harsh, rough or wet.

OVERALL: I expected a garbage budget lager given the plastic bottle presentation, price, and (to be honest) its Ukrainian origin. I've had abysmal brews from Obolon; this is not one of them. Is it great? No. But it's shockingly drinkable and enjoyable for its low price point (beating out even local generic supermarket exclusive brews in Vilnius as an import), and would make a great student beer, to put it nicely. In terms of the global arena, it's below average, but if one were to factor in price point relative to quality, this is possibly amongst the best budget beers I've ever had.

Sort of the Blair Witch Project of beers...not very good generally speaking, but boy does it make a hell of a return on its meagre investment.
