For celebration of our two year anniversary at Loakal Branch Brewing Company, we aged this stout in select Buffalo Trace whiskey barrels for 18 months to deliver a complex profile of rich chocolate, vanilla, and oak, with just a hint of bourbon, supported by a healthy backbone of caramel, pale chocolate, chocolate, and black malts. Wonderfully drinkable, this stout is exhibits subtle carbonation and is perfect for the cold winter months around a fireplace or wood stove.

Bought a bottle at LB.
Celebratory brew re 2nd Anniversary. 18 months in Buffalo Trace barrels.
Chose my favorite snifter from The Bishop’s Arms; poured out @55 degrees.
STUNNING appearance with a 3-4” plumy tan head created in the snifter with only a moderate pour. Certainly helped with higher temp, but the depth and creamy richness of the head was really extraordinary.
Then…Dark walnut with hints of burnt orange and garnet to light. Just Beautiful.
Maintained a thin tan halo and had nice lacing.
IMO…One of the best stout pours I have seen in over 50 years of drinking stouts including pulled pours in Britain and Scandinavia.
Nose is very nice with chocolate, woody vanilla and dark bread.
Taste mirrored. First, it was rich with deep dark malts, chocolate, but then followed with an unlikable roasty bitterness similar to raw vanilla and chocolate with too high % cacao. Good news is this mellowed with airing over 15-20 minutes when I returned to finish glass…but did not entirely disappear.
Body was nicely medium full, very smooth with soft carbonation. Only downside was some back of mouth astringency from some residual bitterness.
HST…Almost came across as a cask pour despite being bottled.I thought it was an excellent medium between a regular and imperial stout. The medium body really carried rather than thinned the flavor as well as feel.
Overall, an excellent crafted brew that came up a bit shy on flavor potential.
Will definitely purchase a few more before gone.
Big kudos to LB crew!
