Wow! This is an excellent hazy IPA!
LOOK:
Super hazy bright yellow. Dense 1" head dies down quickly. Completely opaque/hazy. Beautiful.
NOSE:
Smells like juice, funky, hoppy citrus blast to the nose. Citra and Nelson both create that citrus and then Nelson has that white wine fruitiness which definitely comes through. It also has berries and white grapes. It smells bright, with that funky, "dankiness" from the nelson as well. This aroma is special. A lot like Alpine's Nelson but stronger.
TASTE:
Follows the aroma with a blast of citrus and berry that also includes a funky fruity flavor. This is a hop blast and it's bitter, but it's a "tame" bitterness since it's hazy... But, with that said, this is definitely NOT a hazy for those who don't like hops (in other words, some NEIPAs are like 15-25 IBUs, I don't know what this is, but it seems more bitter than that). Once again, it's NOT a piney bitterness, just huge floral, citrus, and that almost "garlicky" flavor which the Nelson hops creates, and I like it a lot, it comes together great and it tastes unique.
Mouthfeel:
Big, strong mouthfeel but once swallowed, it finishes dry with a clean yet hoppy after taste, and then you want to taste it again. Excellent. I'd say medium with a medium/dry finish.
OVERALL:
Wow! This wasn't cheap (4 pint cans for $21.99 in Orange County CA at a liquor store). My can says "DDH Hazy" which doesn't mean it's a double, BUT the website for the brewery says "DDH Double IPA." Whatever. We know it has a gang of hops in it, that is clear, but it's ABV is still in the range of single IPA, but that's all subjective.
It's a pretty big beer, but it just seems like a bold Hazy Single IPA to me, but either way, it's great!
I highly recommend trying this out if you're into IPAs and especially DDH hazies, AND if you love Nelson hops, this is a must try! Cheers!
