I'm sure everyone here knows, Pittsburgh has some humid summers. What can you do to escape the heat and enjoy yourself? Well I've got the answer. How about a light thirst quenching Hefe Weizen (pronounced hefa Vite zen) in the cool environment of our Hop Garden patio. I can hear you wondering, what is a hefe weizen? Allay your fears my friends because I'm going to tell you. A hefe weizen is a special style of beer made with malted wheat and malted barley. Hefe weizens are from Germany. This beer is top fermented (an ale) with a very special yeast. The Hop levels are kept deliberately low in order to bring out the character of the yeast. If you notice the nose of the beer, it has a clove-like or fruity aroma. The grain bill includes 50% wheat malt and 50% barley malt. It is served very carbonated and a touch cloudy. It is cloudy because it is served unfiltered. The remaining yeast contributes flavor, adds B vitamins, and improves the beer as it ages. Selling points for the Heavenly Hefe Weizen are;

Heavenly Hefe.
Not as cloudy. Lower than normal amount of suspended yeast. Yellow-gold in color. Almost no head.
Musty wheat, breadiness, lemony citrus, grains of paradise, and some tartness that reminds me of green banana.
A firmer, slightly unripe banana jumps to the forefront and dominates the flavor. Still a big dose of white bread crusts and wheatiness. Light clove and lemon. This beer tastes a lot different and a lot better than it smells. Nice American representation.
Just like the flavor/aroma is missing more yeastiness, the body suffers because of it. Too thin. Lacks smoothness. Carb feels coarser than it is.
Not bad hefe. Would drink again.

Had this on tap at the Beer Nutz in Fox Chapel during 3 dollar Sunday local drafts.
A - Wow severely under carbonated for the style. Checking other reviews it seems just a lace ring on this and the color is a cloudy yellow orange tint.
S - Well it has all aspects you would expect for the style: fruity yeasts, banana, clove, and a touch of lemon. It just seems... lacking.
T - Ah it's confirmed this is one watery tasting Hefeweizen Flavors do seem to balance though giving you the much needed Banana and mild cloves. Mild hops and lemons also play together.
M - Thin and watery but good for a summer beer I guess.
Overall being exposed to better examples really makes trying these "homebrew" recipes kind of lackluster. For what it was worth it was crafted, no hard water taste, and easy to pound. Worth drinking if stuck at the brewery.

Also a semi-tart yeast twang. Trademark hefeweizen flavors. Mouthfeel is lighter bodied and alittle thin but carbonation is adequate. Overall, a simple, refreshing wheat that goes down easily.

Sample at the brewpub. Cloudy straw color with a thin white head and stringy lacing. Aroma of wheat and citrus. Light, thin body with a wheaty character, along with mild citrus and yeast. The finish remains thin and watery with a touch of hops. Fairly weak in all regards.

Served in a pint glass with a lemon wedge in the restaurant side of CBW.
Appearance: Nice hazy golden color with the remains of a good head evident; nice lacing.
Smell: Classic hefeweizen - Fruity clove and banana.
Taste: Very yeasty and slightly sour with a mild bitter aftertaste. Pretty standard for the style.
Mouthfeel: Solid medium body; carbonation bubbles tickle the mouth.
Drinkability: This was a very light and smooth brew, maybe too much so. I could easily rip through a few of these without realizing it.
Overall, a very nice hefeweizen to me. The only failing, in my opinion, is that it needs a little more of a backbone to it.

Poured a cloudy pale yellow with a big fluffy white head that left generous amounts of lace as it settled,aromas were quite wheaty and grainy not much citrus or clove just light er note of the latter.Pretty thin mouthfeel near watery but I drank it down with out even noticing I finished so quickly,light on the flavors but they are pleasant enough wheaty with hints of lemon and toasted grain as well but I wanted more spice.Not really a true hefeweizen in character but a easy quaffer,a no brainer.

Served as part of their beer sampler and was one of two seasonals they were currently offering. The other was the Framboise. This one poured an extremely light straw pale color, was hazy and had a thin creamy white head of foam. Soft and decent carbonation throughout. With one sniff, you are blasted with the intense aroma of strawberry bubblegum. Very sweet and fruity. Awesome so far. The taste carries over some of the bubblegum and adds to it a nice lemony sour malt quality. Sweet, sour and fruity all at once. Very nice. The body is light and a small amount of bitterness peeks through. Finishes with a lemony tang. A high quality and flavorful Hefe.

Appears a hazy golden with a white very thin head and sparse lacing thoughout the pint. Aroma predominantly wheat malt tone with a touch of Hallertau, but not much banana and clove aroma here. Taste well the delicate flavors with mild doses of yeast inspired banana clove great simplicity a summer sipper all the way some sharp malt sweetness and detectable mild bitterness very balanced. I must say this is one of those Americanized wheat ales not really a true hefe in my opinion, but I compare it to the likes of Harpoon UFO not bad eh? Mouthfeel well no creamy textures or fluffy high carbonation from this lighter bodied beer that I was yearning for when I saw Heavenly Hefe on the board at Church. Drinkability light and crisp drinkable but hand me an authentic german style hefeweizen.
