In celebration of the Penguins making it to the playoffs this year, we have brewed a special beer - the Playoff Lagr. During all Penguin's playoff games this season we will be offering this beer at $2.68 per pint. The beer style is a Czech Pilsener. Do you get the association? The .68 is Jaromir Jagr's jersey number, and can you guess where he is from? I hope you guessed Czechoslovakia. The beer's origin city is Pilsen, Czechoslovakia. In 1842 it was reported that a Bavarian monk smuggled a pot full of lager yeast from a German brewery to a brewery in Pilsen. The last secret to making consistent lager beers was uncovered. It was the special yeast. Another ingredient that made the original pilsners unique was the very soft water in Pilsen (i.e. low mineral content). Pittsburgh has relatively soft water to begin with. Our Playoff Lagr was brewed with the softest water I could make.
The color of the Playoff Lagr is yellow to golden. You will find it slightly darker than the Celestial Gold. If you carefully swirl the glass and take a big whiff, you will get a full but delicate fresh hop aroma from only the best noble hop - Czech Saaz. The flavor profile is bold and malty with a distinct hop flavor. It finishes crisp and clean with a lingering Saaz bitterness. This is definitely a lighter colored beer that seasoned as well as novice beer drinkers will enjoy.
