$ 6.42 (Including tax)/10 oz snifter ($ 0.642/oz) at Church Brew Works, Lawrenceville, PA. Reviewed 8/16/18.
Appearance – 4.
Body – Dark brown/black, opaque, slight effervescence.
Head – Chopped by bartender. What remains is a tan, irregular, three mm ring and thin partial layer.
Lacing – Fair. Partial rings of tiny to small bubbles.
First pour – N/A.
Aroma – 3 – Faint coffee, no coconut.
Flavor – 3.5 – Begins and ends with mild coffee flavor. The middle is coffee. There is, however, no coffee bitterness. There are also no flavors of toasted coconut or roasted malt. No alcohol, no diacetyl, no dimethylsulfide.
Palate – 3.25 – Medium, almost creamy, lively carbonation.
Impression and interpretation – 3.5 – For using 100 pounds of toasted coconut in the mash, it seems odd that it appears in neither the nose nor the flavor. Dark beers are what Church does best, but this is at least one step below their usual excellent dark brews.
