Poured into a goblet. great dark tan head (tiny bubbles) that stays around for a while. Beer is a shade beneath pitch black. Has just a hint of cola color.
Smell is a bready yeasty, spicy and pumpkins are there noticibly. the roasty malt works a bit with the bready spicy.
Middle is smooth and coffe-like with noticale pumpkins. They didn't go overboard here. I'm usually looking for more malt and body here than what this has to offer.
Main event to the finish is pumkin, perhaps just a hair too much.
Overall this ain't bad and I can't say I've seen a stout rendition of a pumpkin beer. Great departure from the usual Brown ale base. worth snagging up while it's around if you can find it.
Nov 11, 2011Smell is a bready yeasty, spicy and pumpkins are there noticibly. the roasty malt works a bit with the bready spicy.
Middle is smooth and coffe-like with noticale pumpkins. They didn't go overboard here. I'm usually looking for more malt and body here than what this has to offer.
Main event to the finish is pumkin, perhaps just a hair too much.
Overall this ain't bad and I can't say I've seen a stout rendition of a pumpkin beer. Great departure from the usual Brown ale base. worth snagging up while it's around if you can find it.

Church Brew Works : Pumpkin Stout
Pours a dark brownish black color. Off white head forms and little lace. Aroma of cinnamon spice, roasted malt, and lightly floral. In the taste, big time nutmeg, some cinnamon, roasted, coffee like malt and piney hop bitterness. A decent amount of bittering hops for any type of pumpkin ale. Faint pumpkin, roasted malt, and alot of spice. Medium bodued feel, somewhat smooth with good carbonation. Overall, an interesting ale, blending stout with pumpkin and spice. Somewhat aggressive but worth the try.

A - Pretty pitch black with a 1/4 inch of mocha colored head. Pity that it quickly recedes to nothing not even a ring of lace.
S - Smells of a nice touch of hops but no chocolate, roast, or coffee.
T - Wow the flavors clash on this one! One the more noted flavors was the cinnamon which tasted like big red gum. The only roast I got was a mild bit in the finish but again clashed with a piney hopping.
M - Pretty medium bodied but it was pretty hard to drink.
Overall not a very good at all. It's a pity that my first experience with a Pumpkin Stout was this.

Church Brew Works Pumpkin Stout has a black, opaque body with a thin line of brown foam on top that doesn't leave any lace.
The aroma leans heavily on spices, with lots of nutmeg and cinnamon. Underneath the spice are hints of chocolate and roasted malt.
Although the aroma of spices was powerful, the flavor is even more so. There is a ton of nutmeg, which often happens in any recipe that uses such a potent spice. This beer also has a good dose of cinnamon and maybe a touch of clove. The finish has just a hint of both chocolate and roasted malt. Too many spices for me.
Fairly good mouthfeel, but with relatively low carbonation.
I liked the idea of a pumpkin beer with a bold dark malt profile, but this beer only really had half of that equation.

Jason's growler. Dark black coloured body. No head. Little arbonation, always was. Good aroma of chocolate and pumpkin and roast. Medium mouthfeel that brings the roast and chocolate, the pumpkin, cloves and nutmeg. Nice to have a pint, not tremendously drinkable otherwise.Balanced.

A: This beer pours a deep, but thin looking dark brown. Slight mahogany highlights when held to the light. 1/4 inch of light brown head sits on top of this beer and leaves minor lacing on the glass.
S: Nose is overwhelmingly of spices. Nutmeg, cinnamon and clove.
T: Taste is just spice, spice, and more spice. Nutmeg, cinnamon and clove and are overpowering in this brew. There are mild hints of roastiness and bitter chocolate but you really have to search for them under the spices.
M: Lighter side of medium body, moderate carbonation, far to thin feeling.
D: Goes down ok, mild kick, not a very good representation of style. Pumpkin stouts can be done well, this one wasn't.
