Asteroid Ale is a version of an old German stein beer, or stone beer, where the liquid wort is brought to a boil by dropping fire-heated rocks into the kettle. Only for this one, brewers Dan Yarnall and Justin Viale used three meteorites, about the size of baseballs, that they heated overnight in the brewpub’s pizza oven to 800 degrees. Then they submerged them in the wort “for instant caramelization,” Mr. Casey explains. The meteorites were not enough to bring the brew to a boil but were left in for the boil and the rest of the brewing process.
