Church Brew Works

Pours a dark brown, almost black color with a light brown head. Aroma of roasted malt with a touch of cocoa. The flavor also had more roasted, coffee like flavor. Chocolate was midway through and the taste finished with a hint of dark fruit. Alcohol was wel hidden. This is a very good stout.

Definitely not retired. Had it on 01/30/15.

They must have made some more as this was brought back from my friends weekend visit to Pitt. From the clear glass growler that was label Church Brew Works. Nice heavy dark coloring with a slow rising chocolate head that fades back into the beer as if it can't really escape the gravity. Smells of roasted grains and a touch of alcohol with fruity touches. The taste is wonderful and reaffirms my belief that these larger stouts really turn somewhere around anything over 10% if not managed right. The roastyness is well meet by the creamyness and the hops are very muted adding mostly a rounded bitterness. The body could be a touch thicker but it has been in a growler for 3 days so. Very drinkable as the growler dissappeared quickly between the two of us.

Always a fan of the Church's seasonal rotating taps, this big complex Imperial Stout is no different. They use a similar recipe for their fruit infused imperial stouts they have released, this one just lacks the fruit twang but still remains tasty as all hell. Appearance: Dark pitch black body with a big tan head in my 10z. tulip shaped glass as the head dwindles it leaves behind specks of lacing. Aroma: Deep dark roasts very bold and robust pleny to burnt heavily darkened roasts, with hints of coffee and dark chocolate with an undying hop character at 80 IBUs. Also to note is the fusel alcohol notes that are detectable in the waves of bold roastiness. Taste: Flavor is complex big waves of dry bitter sweet chocolate and coffee blasts, the dark roasts pull their weight so nicely soft finish with hop bitterness taking the edge off the burnt roasts. Touch of smokiness very good and bold brew from the brewers at Church. Mouthfeel: Big heavy beer high gravity but served a bit too cold, carbonation is solid no big complaints to report I was satisfied. Drinkability: I could easily take out a growler of this gem, I'm a big fan of their dark beers but this one is outstanding.

Served in a 10 oz. tulip at CBW. The color was very dark red/black, with a tiny bit of head. The smell was a roastiness mixed with chocolate sweetness. The taste was chocolatey sweet, with roasty notes in the flavor as well, and just a slight bit of warming alcohol. The mouthfeel was chewy and velvety, but just a bit flat. As for drinkability, it was surprisingly good and I could have as many as possible before hitting the floor.

CBW comes through again with a fantastic imperial stout, in the middle of summer no less when it's just so missed. A good character to this one, the chocolate I love so much in a beer, and this is one I hope will be there for a while.

Thick, chewy Imperial Stout with many attributes. Pours an opaque black with ruby highlights around the edges when exposed to the light. Creamy, dense head that laces nicely.
Initial taste is of dark, ripe fruits, bittersweet chocolate and a wisp of licorice. Sweetness is held in check with subtle hops. The middle has some tannic astringency from heavily roasted malts and plenty of chocolate for a substantial mouthfeel. The finish is long accentuating the maltiness of this fine brew.
