This classic German style is a bit of a conundrum; the look of a darker ale with the hint of a lighter lager. Less of a light porter and more of a black pils, this is a lovingly-crafted, cola-hued, tan foam-laden winter beer dream. Brimming with bready notes of pumpernickel and chocolate wafer, it’s balanced with the floral and spice characteristic of Noble hops.

Pours a dark root beer color with lots of beige foam. Grainy aroma with something dark. Warm and rich tasting with plenty of suds on the tongue. Rather sweet with a scratchy charred edge. Moderate bitter aftertaste, mostly from the burnt malt it would seem. Just a slight fruity note to suggest hops. Some smoke in the aftertaste. Actually, the brewer's description is pretty good. So is the beer. From the 16 oz can purchased at O'Shea Brewing. Dated June 10, 2024.

Dull matte black with a moderately tall tan foam head.
A little roastier than I'd expect, yet also tangier, I get cigar smoke meeting a sort of nuttiness.
It's okay, but a bit more aggressive than I'd like.
