one of the beers i liked a lot in here, robust for the style, lots of roast to it, more than i think you would generally find in a european example of the style, and it works, especially this time of year, better lagering here than in pretty much any of their others i tried too, more professional execution, perhaps a tad more residual sugar than i need in it, but the beer overall is both good and somewhat original, well done. dark dark brown with reddish edges and more head than a lot of them had, off white and staying about a half inch tall. nose of roasted barley, coffee beans, raisin, fig, and light smoke, good bitterness to offset the obvious caramel and molasses aspect, only very subtle european attributes, but its there in the yeast a little bit, not neutral in a good way, earthy and warming without being strong. the flavor is roasty too, less bitter than it smells a little, nuances of cola, weak coffee, molasses, and wood, with subtle dark bread character from the yeast and a smoothness thats a big part of the appeal. id love to see it lagered out a little more, but this is nice overall, and fits this fall real well. i could see this making an excellent morning beer!
