maybe my favorite of the beers i had here, way up there anyway, one of their more ambitious and best executed, better fermentation than some of the other lagers, it hides its strength well, and has a lot of roast to it but plenty of nuance as well, a nice recipe, perfect for the fall, i wished they had more at this level. real dark brown with a short but lasting tan head and an aroma of dark barley, campfire, rich fudge, dark soil, and licorice, really complex, wintery without being boozy, a little molasses type sweetness in play. the flavor is similar and this is a long one, almost has a wood aged maturity to it, some european type yeast character, raisin, dark brown sugar, and a sort of concentrated intensity, plenty of espresso and coffee type roasted bitterness on the back end which keeps it balanced, bready, dark and just short of burnt, sweet through the swallow but still obviously a cold conditioned beer too, and it warms up nicely. this is a style i wish more american breweries would dabble in, pretty much always order when i see them, and im glad i had this, a top performer on their current draft list, full and sturdy but not too heavy to drink on, very nice.
