a properly made take on this style, no frills, nice cold fermentation character, majorly drinkable despite its dark color and roasty profile, still quintessentially german in terms of both grain and yeast, dry and with lovely balance, refreshing even for what it is, a top beer from our visit to this lovely little brewery. dark brown in color, frothy creamed up burlap head, sudsy and lasting, web lacing as it drinks. aroma of dry roasted bitterness, beautiful dark barley and mineral complexion, bready yeast in the background, clean and simple, faint licorice and really dark chocolate without being rich, awesome. just a bit more in the flavor, faint caramel in the center from some middle malts, graham cracker, and an almost bread yeast character to this strain that definitely brings up some earthy wet minerality, rocky and drying, a nice back end for this. some lingering almost ashy bitterness, smooth medium body, quick otherwise, and drinkable as they come, even in warm weather. i was impressed with this place, a neat mix of styles and innovation, and its a great hang. thankful for the session i got to have with my brother on their patio! a great schwarzbier here, well ahead of the american brewer curve on these...
