a very well done smoked lager, nice mahogany color to it, looks like a richer vienna type almost, short off white head densely packed on top, looks spot on. the aroma is raisin, fruit leather, dried apple, and german grain, with the right amount of smoke intensity, not bitter or acrid or harsh, not still burning, not course and black, more mellow, a pipe tobacco note to it, nice layered breadiness from the grain, and some unifying lager yeast of the old world, this really is appealing, even in warm weather, but major autumn vibes here. the flavor is killer too, chestnut and acorn and toasted bread, hints of almond, light cocoa, toffee and maple, and a really nice woody smoke complexion thats there from start to finish but has a late high point and slow fade. some lingering sweetness too keeps balanced on the tongue long after the swallow, and the recall is lovely. it could be slightly drier perhaps, and maybe a tad more carbonated to keep things moving, but the pace overall is pleasantly mellow. love the grain layers here, it seems a bit more dynamic than many of its peers, and the smoke, while strong, still leaves some room for the other elements. nicely composed, traditional but distinctive too.
