Picked this up recently at Gary's in Madison, as I never had anything from Heavy Reel before. This was a beast of a beer but at the same time, this was immensely enjoyable and a true dessert Stout that wasn't anything like a typical Sweet / Milk Stout as it had plenty of body and the feel of something fit for the late summer into early fall period that categorizes this time of the year.
Of course, this poured dark as it had plenty of bubbly, mocha head topping it off. Loads of carrot cake, brownie batter, cake mix, cinnamon, and brown sugar were in the nose as this felt like something whipped together in a bowl that had to be topped off with frosting and set on a stand. Indeed, this felt like liquid cake down to the carrot base, sugary undertone, and sense of filling that came out of a tube that was squeezed from behind. Plenty thick, sticky, and softly gritty, it seemed this beer was based on sugar but had enough carrot, banana, and frosting to it to take it to the next level.
Loads of booze, fruit, and sweetness were in here as this felt like liquid rum cake, down to the stickiness and syrupy undertone that made this feel anything but weak, topped off with the grittiness of cake that gave me plenty to physically, and proverbially, chew on. This felt every bit as strong as it's listed 12.1% ABV on the label as I feel that I needed a small glass of milk to fully get this down but even if I didn't, there was more than enough to like here. Canned on 12/23 of last year with "B THICC" written below it, this was plenty thick and flavorful for any Stout aficionado to enjoy. Who needs dessert when you can get this golden brew in your hand?
