Admiral Pilsner Style Beer - #73

This beer features local, California Grown barley, sprouted (malted) using old-fashioned “floor-malting” methods by one of our close partners, Admiral Maltings, in Alameda, California. When the sprouted barley seeds are dried and lightly toasted in their kiln, they come out fragrant and delicious. From there they go straight into our kettles at the brewery to capture the fresh essence of the grains, like bread straight out of the oven. Brewed as a Pilsner style lager, the Admiral barley aromatics are bright and expressive, bringing notes of sweet hay, perfumy lemons, white tea leaves, and a granitic minerality.

Much better appearance; big durable head, white and sculpted, creamy texture on top; partial foam rings encircle the glass. No change with the smell. The flavor seems richer, more defined sweet grain taste; very light sense of caramel and toffee; honey; what I described with my first review as weak tea now comes across as more of a hop bitterness with a slight suggestion of tea. Still a medium body sensation but more smooth than coarse; nice residual sugar feel; warm.

I don't know if my change of impressions is due to my palate change and/or letting the beer sit for several weeks, undisturbed, in the refrigerator. Regardless, I've grown to greatly appreciate this beer more so than at first.

Clear, golden body; minor bit of coarse carbonation; relatively thin head, white colored and semi-creamy texture. Wonderful initial aroma of delicate cereal grain which gives way to a nice fragrance of fresh berries and tropical fruit. Simple pleasing taste; not much grain flavor per se but a nice bit of fruitiness and weak tea. Medium body; mildly coarse of the palate with a gentle underlying warmth.

This is a decent beer but the weakest in flavor of all the Hanabi beers I've had to date.
