Isariah Helles Style Lager Beer - #97
This beer showcases a century-old heirloom variety of barley named Isaria that originates from southern Germany, a rarity in the contemporary brewing landscape. As is typical with heirloom varieties, it imparts a unique aroma and flavor profile, along with a substantial mid-palate weight for a lighter style of beer. Brewed as a Helles Style lager, the Isaria barley produces a beer with a distinct hazelnut character, complex forest aromatics, and a minty, lifted finish.

Pours a gold/amber with excellent head retention. Honey and light grain on the nose. Get some honey malt character to go with some pleasant hoppy lime bitterness. There was no denying as I drank this that this was well-made. This is one of those lagers where it isn't exactly in my wheelhouse, but I couldn't help but admire the craft that went into this. With that said, I think that the big question with Hanabi is whether it is worth the price. In Napa, where everything is expensive, a glass of a good cab can be over $20, the expensive lager can seem like a reprieve. Now that I back home on the East Coast, a fridge full of Notch Polotmavy, I am once again reminded that world class lager does not have to come at an extravagant price. If we are judging just based on the liquid, I can say that this is a good one. With further context, your mileage may vary.

Pours a clear, light gold color, appears amber in the glass; very dense and lively carbonation; thick, long-lasting head, white and densely sudsy; sculpted. Amazing aroma; fresh cut pear and tropical fruits; honey. Fine balanced flavor; light grain and honey; ethereal esters; moderate bitterness overall. Medium body; soft and smooth with a touch of carbonation prickliness; semi-dry.
A wonderful, impressive beer emanating a fantastic aroma. The rest of the beer is solid, with a superb mouthfeel.
