473ml can served at about 8 degrees into a chalice. Durand purchase. Canned October 2023. I saw eisbock and it was an immediate buy.
Appearance - Clear-ish dark mahogany brown colored pour with absolutely no head that last beyond ten seconds. A couple of streams of effervescence do rise to the surface of the glass.
Smell - Barrel, grapes, malty mixture with elements of bread, molasses and especially treacle. Some dark fruits including raisins and figs are also in attendance.
Taste - Boozy with lots of grape, some barrel and then a wheaty chalkiness flavor comes in. Sourdough rye in the conclusion with some raisins. Grape shines through more on the second sip. Treacle slips in as it warms. Peppery element at the close too.
Mouthfeel - Low carbonation, full bodied, but yet thin in texture. Maybe more watery than you'd expected out of something this substantial. Does have a nice warming sensation in the back of the throat. Feel improves considerably as it warms.
Overall - I love the balls to try this brew and while it is missing a few things the initial grape smell and taste, general wheaty background and appropriate amount of barrel to be noticed but not overpower are pretty well done. Worth a try if you can find it and definitely a brew to be served on the warmer side.
