Pours a slightly hazy, bright golden orange color with amber edges and a one finger off-white head that quickly settles into a thick, lasting ring. Decent retention with steaks of soapy lacing left behind.
Smokey peated malt aroma with a decent amount of campfire and rauch-like character countered by a sweet caramel malt backbone. Hints of ash, campfire, charcoal and smoked meat but not completely overpowering. There's just enough smoke before hints of bread, caramel, toffee and dark fruit come forward.
This beer has a full body and delivers on the smokey promise of the nose. Not burnt or overly charred with hints of liquid smoke, charcoal and smoked bacon followed by caramel malt sweetness, sourdough bread, jammy apricot and biscuit. Very complex and well balanced with great smokiness incorporated into the flavors of the base. Great example of the style and possibly the best beer I've had from Iron Hill so far.
