2008 rate.

Draft at Iron Hill North Wales. Pours a clear dark brown with almost reddish highlights. Small head. Aroma is really sweet, powdered chocolate, with a whiff of some milder european hops. Malty, rich flavor, mildly bitter. I'd like to be able to start recognizing the kinds of hops used in a beer. Kind of thin in the mouth. Rich and enjoyable, not really favorite style but a good take.

Appears a dark mahogany with a small white head that sticks around for a minute before fading into a mild collar. Some spotty lacing is left around the glass.
Smell is of sweet toffee, caramel, cocoa, with a mild fruitiness.
Taste is of the same aromas and I can't seem to put this down. The taste is really that good and addictive.
Mouthfeel is sweet, mildy chewy, and smooth.
Perhaps not the best U.S. version I've had but I enjoyed this one tremendously.
I think the Americans may finally be on-par with the Germans at this point with the amount of good doppel's that have been cranked out over the past few years.

Appearance: beautiful bronze in color with some copper highlights. The 1/2" head didn't last long, as it fell and remained a coating on the surface. No lacing develops.

Smell: easily detectable malt sweetness with some caramel candy.

Taste: a simple yet tasty beer. Huge malt backbone with some ripe fruits, caramel, and low bittenerness. There is also a mild toasted tone lingering in the background. Alcohol is not detectable as with some other doppelbocks.

Mouthfeel: smooth and almost reaching a lite syrup consistancy. The sweet malts linger long on the tongue.

Drinkability: nicely drinkable as this is quite malty but not an alcohol bomb. Two or three can easily be quaffed.

Just a stunning deep ruby red/ebony hue (dopplebocks might be some of the prettiest beers anywhere) with a tight head of clingy cream hued lace n' foam. Nose was interesting, malts, wisps of fruit, and warm cheese.

Taste is hard to describe. Its creamy, malts, rich, some fruits, with a very slow fading finish. Aftertaste? Nope.

I wish I could say better things about this. Don't get me wrong - its good - but it was one dimentional (mostly dried fruits and malt) and a downhill ride from the inital taste. I would like more peaks and valleys, but its still worth trying.
