Iron Hill Brewery & Restaurant "Funkaster"
$3.75 / 12 oz. @ Iron Hill, Lancaster, PA
Notes: Apparently this is a Vienna lager aged for 3 years in Chadds Ford wine barrels with 3 strains of Brettanomyces added. Slightly hazy deep copper/ruby body with orange highlights beneath a short head of bright white. The head drops fairly readily, holding better than many sour beers, but still leaves no lacing behind. Tartish/fruity and subtly malty aroma. The flavor is massive: sweetish with a hint of honey, very tart ~ sour, fruity (cherry, plum, raspberry, raisin, low level watermelon), and spicy. It's moderately bitter but the acidity is really all that's needed (it's a little likewhen you vomit into your mouth but swallow it back down ~ sorry). Woody, dry finish lingers. Overall very clean and nicely done. Medium-light in body with an effervescent, fine carbonation that's very crisp, accentuating the acidity. Surprisingly complex beyond the sourness - a real winner!
