Iron Hill Brewery "Spruce Moose"
16 fl. oz. can - freshness dating is illegible
$2 @ Javies Beverage, Phila., PA
Notes via stream of consciousness: This is an IPA brewed with spruce needles and Chinook and Simcoe hops. It's labeled at 7.2% ABV. The body is quite cloudy and golden in color beneath a finger's width of white foam. The aroma isn't that bright for an IPA but it is fruity and there's a little bit of pine, and perhaps spruce, to it. The flavor follows with a lot more fruity hoppiness. There's some pine from the Chinook, and perhaps the spruce needles but who can really tell? There appears to be some oats in the grain bill, and there's probably some wheat as well although I can't taste it. I get the Chinook, and the Simcoe, but to me it also seems like there might be some Mosaic in there ~ I'm not saying there is, just that I get that berry-like flavor. It's moderately bitter, and very much a New England style IPA in that sense. It's well balanced and rounded, and surprisingly drinkable for 7.2% as I don't notice any alcohol. In the mouth it's medium bodied on the lower end and gently crisp with a fine-bubbled, slightly lower than standard level carbonation. Overall this is a really enjoyable beer that deserves more attention than it will probably get.

A thanks to the founder of the canquest, woodychandler, for this beer. Poured from a 16 oz. can. Has a hazy golden color with a 1/2 inch head and some floaties. Smell is of spruce, little else. Taste is spruce, light citrus, mild bitterness. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a decent beer.

Ok so the beer looks like a typical hazy IPA. Smells like pine trees and pineapple. The taste is odd at first with a hardcore punch of spruce needles, but then melds into a likeable Neipa finish. This is without any ridiculous juice taste, aspirin or cheese/onion from excessive hops. Obviously not for everyone. At 6.0% I was able to drink a couple of them but no more then 3!
