Forward: This is a part of Iron Hill's "study in hops" which utilizes a mother batch of their Irish Red and then dry hopped in several batches with a different single hop variety. 5 different versions were produced, this one was dry hopped with Columbus. Served on Beer Engine 4-3-10.
A: Poured a nice slighty hazy ice-tea color with a beautiful frothy, whipped milky white head that was everlasting. A solid finger high and retaining it left a milky splash coating for a lacing.
S: The nose got off to a very good start. Iron Hill is generally reserved when it comes to their aroma but this delivers a heft dose of dry flowery hops that are sure to please. Sticky pine cones and sweet and pungent flowers emit with very good results. I should disclose that I am a huge Columbus hops fan, particularly that of Anderson Valley's Hop ottin and this comes pretty close aromatic wise albeit a bit less strength wise, but was still very appealing.
T: The flavor was smooth with a light toasted nature compliments of their Irish red while the dry hop additions of Columbus add a dry flowery touch. Unfortunately since this was dry hopped only, it lacked that pungent flowery flavor and was not as strong as the nose would suggest but was still appreciable. Fresh pine notes are picked up but it is the dry hpping of the Columbus hops that really give this a different spin from the typical citrusy hopped beers.
M: From the beer engine this produced a medium body and incredibly smooth and easy feel on the tongue. Definitely no complaints here. A light flowery pollen like coating graces the tongue after the swallow.
D: Drinkability was very good and easy, making for a good summertime drink that left a flowery aftertaste. Growler worthy and a good reason to stop in since all their beers in this hop series are limited to 1 firkin.
Final thoughts. I found this to be refreshing and loved the utilization of the Columbus hops for dry hopping, I only wish they would make a beer with it involved as the flavor hop. A good idea taken from Sly fox but perhaps the hop presence could have been more highlighted and distinguishable if used against a palate of pale grains and as the flavor hop instead of just dry hopped.
