Transcribed from notes taken on 05 Mai 2010.

This was presented to me with a finger of light-tan head with decent retention. Color was a deep reddish-amber, kind of coppery in its appearance, with NE-quality clarity. Nose had a sweetish smoky quality, marrying the best of both the pepper and the base beer, Erin Shea's Red Ale. Mouthfeel was medium with a wild blend of spice/heat and smoke on the tongue. Finish had a tickling heat that lingered in my throat along with a very pleasant smokiness. It was good on Totally Chipotle Day/Cinco de Mayo and it would be equally welcomed by me on an occasional basis, but as a regular thing, not so much. Made with Chipotle and Pasilla peppers.

On tap @ Iron Hill (Lancaster, PA) on 5/5/10 during their Mug Club Cinco De Mayo party. This was a single keg of their Irish Red Ale infused with chipotle and poblano peppers. Served in an oversized mug.

Pours a clear coppery red, with a thin covering of light mocha head (it's interesting that the spice must have added some color). This stays rich around the edges, with some thinner wisps in the center, and throwing a foamy cascade of lace up on the sides of the mug which quickly slides down. The Red Ale character is probably showing itself the most here in the aroma, with notes of caramel, bread, citrus, and some floral hops. A deeper whiff gets the spices coming out in the back and I'm pleased to find that they aren't overly aggressive at all; being more subtle in the nose with a pleasantly flavorful and warming feel to it.

The taste is similar, with the bulk of the base flavor being up front, featuring plenty of caramel sweetness, toasted bread, and some green earthy bitterness for balance. The peppers slowly creeps out across the palate as I work on this, with a spicy and warming nature that tingles the lips and roof of the mouth. Just the right amount of light heat is present and it luckily doesn't overstay its welcome. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a smooth prickliness to it that glides across the palate fairly well, despite there being some thickness to the body.

This turned out pretty nice. As I mentioned before, the spice wasn't overdone and actually added a welcome extra layer of flavor to the profile, along with just a touch of a warm peppery kick to the finish. This drank decently but I think that the mix of the peppers plus the thicker aspects of the body held this back just a tad for me. A pint would have been fine but a full mug of this lingered around just a little too long.
