Burton IPA

Pours a slightly hazy, bright golden yellow color with a two finger frothy white head that very slowly settles into a thick, lasting ring. Good retention taking a while to settle and leaving steaks of soapy lacing behind.

Slightly earthy soily hop aroma with grass and pine countered by sweet malt, biscuit and bread. Hops aren't as strong as preferred would prefer but the malts are kept in check which is different for the style. Subtle caramel sweetness with toffee, dark bread and subtle dark fruit.

Full body with subtle earthy hop bitterness countered by a prominent yeast character and a pale biscuit malt backbone. Grassy pine needle and sticky resins followed by some bread, biscuit, apple and pear. Kind of pedestrian but hops are stronger than than nose suggested. Malt presence is stronger than I prefer but aren't too dark or overly roasted. Faint hop presence is still able to stand out.

 

 

 

Had this on 2012-09-32 in Lancaster, PA at the brew pub

A - Mildly hazy gold with a big white creamy head and decent lacing.

S - Fruit, light malt and a bit of caramel.

T - A good bit of caramel, mild roasted malt, apple, stone fruit, citrus and some hop bitterness. Nicely yeasty. Dries pretty well. Clean aftertaste without much lingering bitterness

M - Light-medium body and mdium carbonation. A little creamy but finishes dry.

O - Enjoyable. A Burton IPA is arguably the first IPA style with this monicker. The original brew is described in the new book by Mitch at Stone Brewery as proabably having a Brett finish form the long ocean voyage to India. This didn't have this at all but was enjoyable nevertheless.

I had this during the hop attack event at Iron Hill Lancaster.

The color is light golden with slight amber tinge and thick white cream w/ tight bead crowns the ale. The smell is fruity and floral with a light nutty malt scent and tinge of toffee in the peripheral with slight mild herbal accent and hint of spice from either the hops or yeast. The feel is dry and toasted at first with medium high carbonation and mild sweetness with a semi-high bitterness level and gentle astringency.

The taste comes off in a way that is toasty from the malt iwth slight yeast flavor up front and mild stone fruit notes with floral hops come forward as it gradually increases in temperature. The tinges of spice add to the complexity with subtle element of citrus from the hops in the finish. The overall impression was this is a quality English IPA, solid drinkability and does not go too far with the yeast yet it has a nice balance from the malt with nice flavor in the hop profile, well worth having again.

 

 

Draft offering at the Lancaster location. This brew appears a clear copper to orange color with an off-white froth atop. A full wall of patchy lace coats the glassware after every sip.

The aroma of this brew includes some toasty notes of caramel malt, citrus hops and a bit of mineral aspect fills the void. This is not a bold smelling brew by any means. It is quite muted and mellow but enjoyable nonetheless.

The taste is mineral filled initial with some hebal components that get grassy with hints if citrus hops. A faint toasty malt flavor is present that persists into the aftertaste without contributing any sweetness. A bit of fruity hops/alcohol is noted in the aftertaste.

This is a medium bodied brew with a light level of carbonation. A bit mineral filled that I didn't particularly like but it wasn't bad. Worth a try if you get a chance but this wouldn't be my top pick if given other choices.
