On cask, via hand pump, @ Iron Hill Chestnut Hill on 4/29/12. Served in a goblet. This is the Germantown Brown Ale aged on beans from the nearby Chestnut Hill Coffee Company.

Pours a deep ruddy brown, topped with a finger of sudsy off-white/light mocha head. This soaps the sides of the glass with heavy and sticky lacing. The aroma smells delicious with robust coffee character completely dominating this. There is a touch of cocoa, nuttiness, and some green floral character along the back but that java flavor just totally hogs up the front of the nostrils.

The taste is mellower, with a blend of acrid roasted coffee, light cocoa and caramel sweetness, and a fair bit of nuttiness. Hops also have more of a presence than they did in the nose with green citric character that firm up the back of the profile. The finish is dry and bitter with equal parts roasted char and hops. The mouthfeel is medium to lighter bodied with a soft and bubbly feel to the carbonation that keeps this drinking quickly. Even considering the cask conditioning here, this still feels a little too light in the mouth.

The coffee bouquet on this is off the charts but the taste didn’t quite bring it like I thought it would and wasn’t helped by the too soft feel here as well. This might have been one of those times where the cask serving might have hindered this more than helping it.
