The Lighter Side is a barrel-lagered Helles. It pours a dark yellow color with notes of bread dough and vanilla, followed by some honey, honeysuckle, white pepper, and oak.

On tap at Strangebird Brewery in Rochester, NY.

This one pours a burnished golden yellow color, with a small head, and lots of lacing.

This smells lightly bready, with lemon zest, oak, and grassiness.

Strangebird has had a few oaked lagers, and they’ve all been very tasty. This is super soft, but with a pleasantly spicy and floral bitterness, and a wonderfully bready and doughy malt backbone. A nice soft oak stripe runs across the body of this beer, softening it out.

This is light bodied, crisp, clean, and super drinkable.

Strangebird continues to stand out in the Rochester scene, being well above the pack for the most part.

Bought a 4 pack of this in honor of the eclipse, and because I really appreciate how Strangebird honors historical styles while also experimenting in ways that aren't confined to jooooosy IPA's or kettled sours. I was intrigued by how barrel-aging would affect a helles. This checks all of the appearance boxes, but the oak and vanilla flavors from the barrel completely overwhelm the buscuity crispness I love from a helles, so it's not super balanced on that front. Good, not great overall, and won't be buying any more before April 8.
