The number of fans and friends of Bayern Brewing has steadily been increasing out in Eastern Montana. Bayern Brewing wanted to recognize the hard-working folks who are "Rockin’ the Bakken" by honoring them with our own black gold, a German Dark Doppelbock called "Bakken Bock." Bayern Brewing has been brewing authentic Bavarian beers like its award-winning Doppelbock for over 20 years. Bakken Bock is a lager, so it is smooth and does not have the rough bite and/or aftertaste of other dark beers such as stouts or porters. It is also moderately-hopped with German Hallertauer Perle and Czech Saaz hops, so it is a well-balanced treat after a hard day on the oil fields. Of course, with a starting gravity of 18+ degrees Plato and an 8.4% ABV, it means you really ought to heed that warning about no operating heavy machinery after drinking Bakken Bock.

Poured from 12oz bottle into glass. Label has Best Before as '8 18'.
Ruby brown colored body. Minimal light tan head settles to bubble fed cap and ring. Leaves behind a few spots of lacing.
Caramelized malt aroma, with a hint of molasses.
Taste is the roasted malts with caramel, toffee, molasses, and plum. Pleasant lager yeast. Some light floral hops. Rather sweet in a dark fruit sort of way. No bitterness, and well balanced.
Medium mouth feel. Good carbonation.
For my first Bayern beer, this is a real taste treat. Purchased on the edge of the Bakken in Bismarck ND, from the singles shelf. Sturdy and quite flavorful dark lager.

perhaps one of the unintended consequences of all this diversity in my beer diet these days (and years really), is that the six pack has become almost obsolete in my world, at least rare as can be in my fridge. i too often opt for an expensive single serve or two rather than six of the same. part of it is my penchant for the new obviously, but another factor is that the most interesting and high quality beer out there often tends to not be in a sixer. all of that is to say that i rarely have six 12oz bottle of beer if the same kind anymore, so a beer like this is a treat in that format for me. with limited selection in rural montana for christmas, this was actually a blessing in disguise. a sturdy malty bock thats quite well made from what i regard as one of the better breweries in the state. deep reddish brown without a real lively head but a fine aroma and flavor of caramelized european grain, rich flavorful lager yeast, and the right amount of booze burn and residual sugar. sure its a little simple as they go, but its also quite traditional. i appreciated it more and more with each bottle, and would not have derived the same satisfaction from this in a single serve format. actually warms up nice but is best when ice cold. a fine autumn and winter brew from these guys, and it packs quite the punch. it has me keen to do more six packs in the near future, i dont want to lose track of one of lifes greatest pleasures (drinking a six pack of beer)!

Picked up on a road trip, and very glad I did!

Pours a dark, thick black wuth minimal head. Aroma is molasses, toastef grain, coffee, a bit of spicyness, and lager yeast. Taste is dark roasty malt, espresso, with just a hint of hops creating a nice balanced finish. Excellent dopplebock.

Dark ruby red, clear body with small off white head. Light lacing.

Flavors are sweet and bready malts and herbal hops. Carbonation is very light and it's very, very smooth drinking. Exceptional beer, very strongly recommended.
