on paper its just another fruited kettle sour, but in the glass its better than many, an exciting first sour for these guys, or at least the first i have had or seen. its fermented with hefeweizen yeast which makes it more interesting than most, a little something in the ferment to run alongside the pucker, which here is only moderately sour, clean too, and not too sharp to drink. this is spiked with passion fruit and cherry, puree i would imagine, but you can easily taste and identify both without this being in any ways sugary, and while it could use a little more head and carbonation to really brighten it up, i think its a well made beer with quite a lot of character and i appreciate it being something a bit different in a samey category. nothing rushed, too hot, or stinky about the souring, and not too much fruit that the grain is covered up either. its light, not too thin, and gets some additional tang from the passion fruit late. i reckon this will be a fine base for additional fruits, apples in the fall and wine grapes also come to mind, i think both would be cool with the subtle hefe esters, but i hope they turn this into a series with rotating fruit editions, not epic yet, but the potential is certainly here. whole local fruit will be the next step i hope...
