they call this a brown porter on their menu, which leans it english to me, lighter than most american takes, and frankly presenting more like a brown ale in the glass straight up, nice beer through, i havent had a lot of this kind of stuff from these guys, but the list is diverse right now and this is really tasty. pretty color on this, chestnut to mahogany, equal parts brown and deep red, no parts black really, nice shine to it and some frothy head from the tap hanging around awhile. light cocoa and good fruity natural process coffee beans in the nose, playing right in that middle malt sweet spot where its complex without being too sugar, but does still pack a little caramelized character and maybe a maple note, some roast to this too, beyond its color maybe, a little bready thing in the ferment, nutty and well developed beer here it seems, drying minerality is also apparent. the flavor is nice, chocolate and chocolate malt, hazelnut and almond, dark bread and toast, an almost lager-like cleanness coming on early, this isnt one of those richer lingering brown types, and its definitely lighter than the typical porter, but it does have excellent grain depth overall. hints of brown sugar and raisin, toffee and molasses, old wood and leather. really cohesive and tidy and good, not at all too heavy for warmer summer weather. i have been impressed with the downtown meridian location during a couple of recent visits, these guys have come a long way with quality!
