quality black ipa here, nice new one from these guys, love this style even though it has largely died off. this one is lower bitterness than was common when the style was booming, more roasted bitterness than hop bitterness is perceived here, but its well hopped too, and i think this has good balance, good grain and hop interplay, robustly flavored all, smooth and peppy, somewhat wintery, hearty, good. its actually reddish brown, not black, but high creamy tan headed from the faucet and very lively the whole way, i love this style having some pep like this. aroma and flavor do the same thing, some roast, some chocolate malt character, hearty earthy breadiness, light grain sweetness in the foundation, very full spectrum there, sets the hops up super well, which are properly picked and dosed, love the pine and bitter citrus notes together, from zesty and pithy orange to some weedy greenness, woodsy spruce and juniper, and nice slow fading late bitterness, very fresh to me, and really just right in terms of flow and proportions, the malt is spot on even without a darker color, and this went down quickly for a beer so flavorful. nice to see all the innovation over here of late, plenty of new ones on when were there this time. a bit of refinement away from greatness, but i am not one to turn my nose up at black ipa, i am just thankful to be having one. solid effort for sure.
