the least good of the three beers i had on our recent visit here, a coffee golden stout, i still have trouble listing these as stouts when i add them to BA, and this is light in the stout regard, without a big cocoa nib low end or much oat body, not sure if those things are even really part of this or not, just assumed based on what is common in golden stouts, but it has coffee for sure, maybe some oats too actually, a little protein fullness on the palate i suppose, but it doesnt drink like stout, i will say that, oats or not. deeper blonde with less than perfect clarity, an average white head from the tap, and adequate carbonation. i smell not too roasty coffee, i could take more of it in here, but its pleasant, with a dry cocoa note, raisin fruitiness, and a little oily espresso crema character to me, kind of warm and cozy in this, a touch sweet with a honey type element from the malt and maybe there is a vanilla addition too? its not super sweet to me, but its nice, a little toffee, a little almost buttery richness to it, coffee is relatively subtle overall. the flavor is a bit of coffee fade and acid to it that breaks down some of the smoothness the nose kind of shows. the coffee is there with some chocolate to it in the middle, and here i like the maltiness that comes through with it, again i think more coffee would be good, but also here a little more depth, its too light in all regards to really pass as stout, but i dont dislike the beer overall. light nuttiness, almost hazelnut, graham cracker too. this is a tricky style to do well, and to do originally, the good ones tend to kind of all taste the same. embrace this as a light coffee blonde type and it hits a little better. not among their best, but lots of fun new ones on tap right now, lots of innovation lately here!
