I listed this beer as an IPL because it’s a hoppy pale lager, but it’s not Imperial. There seems to be no other category for it. It’s labeled as a “SINGLE HOP PALE LAGER”, and uses Hallertauer grown Amarillo. There are also some oats involved but I don’t get any flavor from them, there’s obviously not enough, and I’m not sure of how much they add to the mouthfeel. It’s body is hazy golden, and it’s cap is white. The head retention and lacing are both very good. When I think of Amarillo I think of orange and berries, something a little like Fruity Pebbles, but it’s not quite the same here. I think that perhaps this German grown version isn’t quite as complex. But that’s OK, it’s a little more refined and I like that. The aroma is clean with soft notes of orange, berries, and grassy Pilsner malt. The flavor follows and the German grown Amarillos are even clearer. They work great with the golden malt. There’s a little bit of hop resin there as well. It’s got a very firm bitterness to it, and it finishes fruity, dry, and bitter. In the mouth it’s medium to medium-light in body, and crisp with a fine-bubbled carbonation. Certainly worth trying.
