Schwarze Rose Craft Beer “Just Fuse It”
440 ml can coded “Best before: 18.04.2022”. Sampled on 02.10.2021
€6.99 @ Naiv, Frankfurt, DE
Notes via stream of consciousness: Well here’s another beer from Schwarze Rose that defies categorization. It’s labeled as a “DDH WEIZEN DOUBLE IPA” and uses 50% wheat, both German and English ale yeasts, and HBC630 and Australian Topaz hops. It initially smells like fruity hops when opening the can, which is a good sign. It’s got a lot going on. I’m finding sweet berries, tangerine, and banana! On to the flavor, the wheaty malt comes through clearly, and is just sweet enough. The fruitiness found in the aroma is doubled with additional notes of apple, pear, peach, cherry, and lychee. There’s some pine and earthiness to it as well, and I get the clove from the Bavarian yeast to boot - this one is a really wild ride! A firm bitterness balances it, and there’s a bit of hop burn that helps too. Maybe some alcohol as well, although it’s not really noticeable. It finishes long-lingering with sweet fading wheaty malt and banana that’s replaced by earthy and lightly piney notes, and then the ghost of fruits passed. Yeah, there’s something special going on here. In the mouth it’s medium bodied and crisp. The only fault I can see here is that it really should have better head retention and lacing given that it’s 50% wheat, but that’s easily outweighed by its uniqueness and breadth of character. Who knew you could do crazy things with a Weizen? Absolut köstlich!
