We enter classic American IPA territory with a simple malt bill, to let the hop combination of Citra, Idaho 7, and newcomer Experimental ID-158 shine through. The growers nicknamed this new experimental hop, “The Ocho”. Not overly bitter to make you bleed your own blood, but expect heavy stone fruit and citrus, with very subtle notes of honey and vanilla. Chuck Norris approved.

My beer journey led me to Colorado, where I was thrilled to sample an IPA from the unfamiliar Luki Brewing. This particular IPA, with its distinctive hop profile and the use of experimental hops, was a true gem. Opting for a pint glass, I served the beer at a crisp 44 degrees. The pour was spectacular, producing a frothy, airy two-fingered head with average retention—the gradual dissipation left behind an exquisite lacing on the glass. The color, a radiant golden yellow with hints of straw, measuring SRM 6, was a visual treat. The clarity was impeccable, with lively carbonation. The appearance of this IPA was nothing short of excellent.
Nosing the glass, I was greeted by a complex bouquet of apricots, pineapple, juicy oranges, subtle lemon, light grass, and honey. Swirling the glass a few times, I discovered hints of biscuits, light herbal and floral notes. The malt backbone seems soft yet firm. You can truly immerse yourself in the interplay of hops and malts in this straightforward IPA with minimal interference on the Nose.
I was expecting something else in the taste. Although the Nose of this beer is more fragrant, the taste falls flat. I taste tangerines, peaches, herbs, grass, and light lemon zest. The malt is soft, with crackers, toasted bread, and biscuit notes. I also noticed vanilla, honey, and a light malty sweetness. The overall taste is balanced, with a slight bitterness that lingers on the palate.
The mouthfeel is soft and astringent with a chalky finish. The body is medium and has medium carbonation.
I am perplexed by this beer. I loved nosing the glass; all the fragrant aromas are mouthwatering. However, the aromatic aromas do not translate to the taste. The beer is messy, with a dire need for balance. Other IPAs I have consumed have a clear direction. These are the hops, and these are the malts, yet they live harmoniously in the bottle. We do not have that with this beer.
