Artefact Brewing Barley Wine 2023 9.8% abv
Light the fire, wrap up under a blanket and enjoy our dark, rich and luxurious Barley Wine.
Staying tru to tradition, we've built this classic style on a backbone of Norfolk grown, heritage, floor malted Maris Otter. Layered with additions of Amber Malt, Double Roast Crystal and Torrified Wheat to add complexity.
Hints of spiced fig, honey and warming alcohol on the nose. Flavours of toffee, currents and Madeira wine.

Effectively blind-tasted as IDRecall the beer spec I listed here earlier this week. 'A local Barley Wine and c9%' is all I remember.
S- Dark fruits, a brief glint of floral perfume - I believe, that was brief. I also seem to get a treacle of demerara facet too...
L- Deep ruby red with a very minor haze [thick layer of sediment unknowingly left adhered to bottle bottom]. Pours with minimal foam, just a ring around the side of the glass - unsurprising for a higher ABV% Barley Wine. I witness a curious thing... In the bare patch of beer surface inside this ring^, a bead of beer, maybe 2mm across, dances randonly over the surface for 3-4 seconds before vanishing. Never seen that before! And that was before even one sip of beer today :-
T- Tick, tick - Boom! Deep stewed fruits, a richness balanced with a tangy facet. The tang will be hops +? It tastes like it's liquor barrel aged, yet is nicely polite about not slamming me over the head about it. Not sure, I don't get whisky (phew); it could be brandy, or port.... we'll see
F- This is no messing about. This would be perfect accompaniment for Xmas day dessert, or with cheese + biscuits. It has the pungency and richness of a dessert wine.
O- What a superb beer, and really nice that it's from a local 'micro'. Would I drink it again, hell yes! ... £7.95/330ml bottle, Ok, hell yes on 'special occasions'!
I started this off fridge cold and was concerned it would take a while to open up in the glass. No, it did so swiftly. I also think I'd enjoy this less if the last 1/4 or so bottle had warmed too much...
Bought from Beautiful Beers in Bury St Edmunds, for home delivery. 330ml bottle. In fact the proprietor delivered it himself in the shop logo'd van!
Now rated and reviewed^, I'll have a 1st look at the beer lables for any clues... 9.8%. 3 barley malts + torrified wheat. Woah they give a profile of the taste 'journey', figs, honey, ABV%, bitter toffee, dried currants, madeira wine, hazelnut. Brewed 28/02/23, Bottled 08/06/23, BB 08/06/28 Bottle conditioned, best served cold, pour with care [re: yeast sediment etc[.
