neat recipe here, a stronger rye based ale done with maple syrup. surprised how light it looks in the glass, more blonde to honey colored than is common with rye beers, especially strong ones, usually creeping at least to copper if not amber in color. this is not quite all the way clear, and has just a short white head from the tap. this smells quite sweet, and the maple is bold enough to almost seem unnatural, but its not chemical like one of those corn syrup wannabe maple products, its better than that. the rye is subtle in the nose but this does have some grainy character coming through, just not as much of the earthy spice that comes from rye malt, more of that in the flavor, sweet for sure, but well grounded too. the maple is dominant in the taste, start to finish its the first thing there, but the rye does kick up a little dry spiciness and is easily placed, i do wish this were drier though, it lingers long and ends up a little filling and slower moving, even if the alcohol strength is pretty well hidden, a little longer in the ferment would help this. i do like the maple flavor, its a little woody too which works with it and the rye, but this feels somehow a little bit incomplete, tasty as it is. i think the rye could be cranked up even a little more to achieve a little more parity with the maple. fun idea, definitely original.
