special anniversary brew, imperial oatmeal porter with chocolate and toffee, tons of flavored beers here, most of them very good, and this one is about as sweet as it sounds, but its also delicious, nice roast to the porter casting coffee notes, and the chocolate aspect presents as dark and earthy rather than sugary, so there is some balance here, but the toffee makes it sugary and desserty, at least it doesnt appear to be lactose or some new school marshmallow flavoring or any of the trending crap. the base beer is excellent and thats key, nice dark roasty malt base, bitter, bready, and balancing. this is shiny black and has a short but densely packed mocha head on it, looks very well refined and isnt overly leggy or viscous despite the sugar and strength. its clean, no smoke, nothing acrid, not greasy or fatty like some of these flavored ones get, nothing much from the yeast, and the toffee really is delicious, like heath bar status in here, adds some richness to the texture and is mostly tasted on the back end, more as it warms, some caramel decadence to it, a bit of milk chocolate late too, faint licorice, and very long and smooth. a fairly regal porter, worthy of the occasion, cant drink a ton of it, but its well made and the extra ingredients are quality. these guys are doing some clever stuff!
