Blind-tasted except for the beer's name and brewery/country.
L- Black to the naked eye, when held to a halogen it's a super-dark chestnut brown. Pours with minimalist patch of pale tan head,
S- Deep, roasty, hints of coffee and mollasses?
T- Certainly coffee, deep roasted, possibly into the foot-hills of having a distinguishable ABV% fuelled alco-brush across the palate. I served this near fridge-cold, I'd suggest giving it a bit more time to lose some chill as I'd expect it to notably open up further as it does.
F- It has a subtle element of richness in parallel lending some balance to the pungent taste. It's towards the dryer side too, not aggressively so but more than one might anticipate of an 8%. In parallel it is low to absent on richness, and the word 'sweet' has never entered the planetory system of this beer's lexicon. The CO2 in the mouth is medium to the lower side - no surprise at 8.0%
O- I like it. It's a notably solid more trad stout for adults, for afficionados too. Over-achievement via understatement. Nothing is out of place, unwanted, or attracts attention ['What's that little facet on the side there??' Nope... the profile is transparent and simple to ID/rate].
The simply labelled yet memorable statement of the caged+ceramic stoppered 750ml bottle make a far greater impression than any labelling with dayglo werewolf alien space ship laser invasions all over, or what ever.
Review/scoring all done, now the reveal, I get to read the bottle lables to see what I missed!
750ml bottle £12.95 BB: '1869 - BB Nov 25'. Lot+Expiry hand-written onto the lable, well that puts it into the 1% IME. Mind you the price might do the same.
Very nice to drink, polished, complex, I'd very happily drink it again though phew it's priced as a treat or special occasion purchase.
Bought from BeautifulBeers/BurySt.Edmunds as part of a large pick-your own consignment to London.
