Pours almost no head, good legs but retention, slight hazy auburn to ruby mahogany color
Nose big sweet candy malt, caramel, toffee, molasses, caramelized sugars, a little biscuity toffee malt, some dark fruits, candied fig, little plum and cherry, light spicy fruity rye, some whisky, bourbon rye like whisky, vanilla oak
Taste rich as well, very malty and sweet, lots of caramel, toffee, molasses, caramelized brown sugar, biscuity toffee and a touch of butterscotch, more dark fruits with plum, black cherry, candied fig, a bit of candied apple, raisin soaked in whisky, fair whisky bourbon-like with a bit of spicy fruity rye, vanilla and nutty oak characters, med bitterness, sticky sweet finish with a bit of warming alcohol, really coats the tongue as well, med to a bit higher spicy hop bitterness kicks in
Mouth is full bod, rich chewy like and starts to get syrupy, a bit of warming alcohol but not much, low to almost no carb
Overall the base barleywine is pretty nice, and the barrel aging comes through well, generally a good beer, just needs carbonation as it starts to get syrupy and I feel a lot more of the goodness would pop
