3-month-old can poured into a tulip. Not sure if the age is showing on this beer or its just naturally a different drinking experience than the other HYFR variant I've had, but this is one of the more mediocre offerings I've had from Xul.
Very pale gold body, fully opaque but not traditionally "hazy" -- honestly look more like a Hefeweizen. Moderate bright-white head on the pour, but a few swirls of the glass bring forth a beautiful, fluffy, eggwhite foam head that could easily be scooped up with a spoon. Best aspect of the beer, to be honest. Nice splotchy lacing from that sticky head.
Generic citrus and tropical fruit on the nose with a lot of grassiness, though more light than dank. Some sharp esters and a semi-sweet note. A little "catty" and subdued, so maybe there's some oxidation going on. What's there is nice but it's really mild, and I'm used to big, bold noses in most Xul hazies I've had before.
Taste follows with the grassiness a little danker and stronger and the fruit leaning towards overripe and stone-heavy. Some sharp pith and bitterness on the back end, which is balanced by the familiar Xul sweetness. It's certainly drinkable, just not particularly noteworthy or nuanced. And in this case the fruit notes just don't hit my palate well.
Feel is light for an 8%+ IIPA, though nicely carbonated and silky smooth. Some nice coating of the teeth, which provides a lingering pith. Little to no alcohol presence besides the esters on the nose (and just a little on the tongue).
Would be curious to try a fresh can/pour to see if my drinking experience was on point or off. As is it was a pretty run-of-the-mill hazy that I would have assumed was closer to 6% than 8%.
