Cold IPA is the hottest new trend in craft beer. “What is it?” you may ask. Essentially it’s an evolution of the Modern West Coast IPA. Brewed at colder temperatures to create an extra clean canvas for the hop profile to shine. Big Rice additions are used to help accentuate this clean canvas concept. This is a New Hokkaido beer so we used a blend of Hokkaido rice and jasmine rice in the grain bill. This beer showcases impeccable balance and drinkability for a 6.9% beer. Hopped with new New Zealand variety Kohai and Galaxy, expect big aroma and flavor notes of papaya, kiwi, and mixed berry. Pours very pale in color and bone dry in the finish, each sip welcomes the next. Come get Yabai (naughty) with us for a few pints of the special brew with the Mountains Walking Crew!

From a 4-pack picked up by my brother-in-law at the source (Mountains Walking) in Bozeman, MT
16oz can poured into a La Fin du Monde tulip

P brilliant gold/orange w/ a 1-2f foamy white head; fairly quick recession; looks good
N med-bold bright citrus/grapefruit notes, hints of tropical fruit; nice; more tropical character as it opens up
T grapefruit, crackery rice malt, a bit of tartness, and passion fruit, w/ some tanginess in the finish/aftertaste; sharp-ish berries and hints of lush grassiness/green hops as well
Mf light-med bod; med to med-high carb level; drinks lighter than the abv would suggest
O a pretty solid drinker w/ quite the pleasant nose

A: Pours a relatively clear pale yellow in color with moderate amounts of active visible carbonation rising quickly from the bottom of the glass and moderate straw yellow + pale lemon yellow colored highlights. The beer has a three finger tall fizzy foamy bright white head that slowly reduces to a large patch of slightly mottled thin film covering the entire surface of the beer surrounded by a very thick ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Slightly heavier than moderate aromas of fruity tropical/kiwi + tropical/papaya + stone fruit/apricot + berry hops over the top of light to moderate aromas of biscuit + rice malts with minimal amounts of sweetness.

T: Upfront there are light to moderate flavors of biscuit + rice malts with minimal amounts of sweetness. That is followed by slightly heavier than moderate flavors of fruity tropical/kiwi + tropical/papaya + stone fruit/apricot + berry hops which impart a hint of bitterness which fades away quickly leaving lingering tropical hop flavors.

M: Light to medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Crisp with a light amount of dryness in the finish.

O: Easy to drink with well hidden alcohol and a crisp fairly clean + dry mouthfeel. Enjoyable with the rice contributing an interesting twist to the more traditional IPA malt bill. Nice tropical hop presence.

cold ipa with rice, another weird and cool one from these guys, super easy drinking, even though my can says 6.9% abv, it drinks lighter than that, the rice really keeps this almost delicate, despite the big bold hopping on it, such a clever beer, these guys really are on a roll, ive loved just about all of their stuff ive been able to drink! very cool ipa, crisp and clean, very low bitterness, big tropical hop profile, white peach, kiwi, melon, white wine, pear, southern hemisphere fruitiness, springy and sexy. golden in color, a little bit hazy, airy inch of white head on top. nothing in the ferment for me, not a lager yeast, no esters in an ale strain, not as crisp as some cold types, but kept light by the rice. the jasmine element is real compatible with these hops, and i get honeydew, green gooseberry, sliced pineapple, and even a little apricot and honey thing to them, delicious. the body is light, the hops are oily, the carbonation is lit, and the overall uniqueness and cohesion of this are excellent. nice with spicy food, salty and umami stuff, a real drinker for being this flavorful. new hokkaido continues to be one off the more fascinating projects in craft beer right now, this stuff has mass appeal but stands as super unique!

16oz can from Brewers Haven. Hazy straw pour, soft, foamy white head. Citrusy aroma, grapefruits and lemons. Taste is light, citrus peel tartness, but a bit too thin to be considered juicy.

A: The beer is hazy pale whitish yellow in color. It poured with a quarter finger high white head that left a collar around the edge and some lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of grapefruit and green grapes are present in the nose.
T: The taste follows the smell and has additional notes of rice and hints of spicy hops.
M: It feels medium-bodied and a bit juicy on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: The use of rice made this beer quite unique compared to other Hazy IPAs.

Soft, pale yellow colored body with a tinge of chalk-white hue; thick and frothy white head. Soft and rich aroma infused with oat-like grain and green hops; mild citrus overtone. Huge citrus presence in the taste; white grapefruit and lime; trace of oats. Bitter with a subtle phenolic edge. Medium body; biting and acidic; oat roundness; dry tartness.

This is a big beer. It exudes depth and character for a cloudy IPA, emphasizing citrus punch with mellow grainy smoothness.
