Scored a free can at an event. Off the Cuff is an IPA by Big Alice Brewery, NY, in collaboration with Gun Hill Brewery.
To call it hazy is an understatement; this one is turbid. (NEIPA all the way) Orange color with a modest bubbly head that doesn’t show much retention.
As advertised in the can, the aroma emits strawberry, guava and lactose. I also detect mango, honey, flowers, and a touch of alcohol.
The first taste seems to indicate that it will be one of those sweet and fruity NEIPAs with low bitterness and a milkshake mouthfeel. However, it is fleeting, as a piny, dry, moderately bitter and crisp mouthfeel emerges. Fir sure, the sweetness of the strawberries, guava and lactose are there, however, they are subtly pushed back to the background enhancing the complexity of flavors quite effectively. There are also flavors of grapefruit pith, lemon and grass.
Medium bodied, moderately carbonated, crisp and with a pine resin finish whose bitterness grows. Juicy yet earthy and dry. At 5%, the ABV is low for an IPA.
Good take on the NEIPA style. Interesting use of strawberry and guava. I appreciate how the bitterness balanced things out.
