Stopped in Mauston recently to escape the Dells, and had a great time at Gravity Box. It shares a space with a coffee shop next door, so there's an open seating area in the middle, with the brewery & bar to the left, and brewhouse visible in back. A nice shaded beer garden out back with more seating. The space was clean and inviting with brick walls and large windows in front. A roll-down door was open in front for more seating by the front windows. Behind the bar was an actual gravity box, which is an agricultural device to collect and move grains.
James was the bartender, and he was super informative and friendly. At times he spoke to the entire bar about beer-related history and trivia, which was pretty cool. They had free popcorn at the bar also, which was nice.
Beer quality and selection was great. I felt like they adhered to traditional and more contemporary styles equally, making for a balanced selection. Highlights were a farmhouse ale, Sabro NEIPA, Black IPA, and a solid American Stout. They had a board next to the brewhouse window with beers on deck which included a Helles, Oktoberfest, and a Mexican chocolate chile stout. Overall the styles were well executed and the variety was good.
I'll definitely come back here, it was worth the detour from the Dells to escape the mediocrity. Gravity Box seemed to be a new anchor business for Mauston, and it was definitely was hopping on a weekend afternoon. Wishing them well in their first year of business.
